National Commission for Minorities
The National Commission for Minorities was established with the regulation of the National Commission for Minorities Act of 1992, framed by the Parliament. which specifically mentioned that minorities feel inequality and discrimination despite the protection provided in the Constitution and the law. Therefore, it became necessary that the Government of India should make some innovative efforts in view of the unity and integrity of the nation as per the requirements of the Constitution. In 1984, for sometime, the Minorities Commission was separated from the Ministry of Home Affairs and constituted a new form under the Ministry of Welfare.
The commission was ordered to perform the following functions:
1. To evaluate the progress and development of the Union and the States minorities.
2. To over see the work relating to the protection of minorities as specified in the Constitution and enacted by the Parliament and State Legislatures/Councils.
3. To make recommendations for the effective implementation of protection by the Central Governmentor State Governments to protect the interests of minorities.
4. To look into specific complaints relating to denial of rights and protection tominorities and to place such matters before the concerned authorities.
5. To study the causes of problems arising out of any form of discrimination against minorities and to recommend measures to solve them.
6. To deal with matters relating to socio-economic and educational development of minorities To arrange for study, research and analysis.
7.To suggest any appropriate steps relating to minorities that are to be taken by the Central Government or the State Governments.
8. Any matter relating to minorities especially arising before themTo prepare periodical or special reports on difficulties to the Central Government.
