Gene Therapy
There are thousands of diseases in our body that occur either as a result of a disorder in the structure of a gene or due to the absence of an essential gene. The treatment of such diseases has now become possible with the help of biotechnology.Through gene therapy, the missing or formed gene is identified by cutting it out and replacing it with a defective gene.
There are mainly three methods used under gene therapy.
- Gene replacement
- Gene correction
- Gene augmentation
The process of replacing a defective or defective gene in place of a defective gene is called gene replacement, where as, under gene correction, the molecular disorders in the gene are slightly modified and corrected. A fully functioning gene is inserted into the cell along with the deleterious gene that functions independently remove the disorder, a method called gene augmentation.
