What is Collegium System?
Appointment, promotion and promotion of judges in the higher courts of the country The present system of transfer is called collegium system.Actually, the collegium is a group of five judges which includes the Chief Justice of India and four senior Supreme Court judges.
This committee of senior judges, headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, takes decisions regarding the appointment, promotion and transfer of judges in the higher courts and sends them for the assent of the President.
Note: There is no provision in the Constitution for the appointment of judges by the collegium.
Questions have often been raised about the collegium system in the judiciary. The controversy over the collegium system is because the judiciary itself appoints its members. It is also against the principle of natural justice and India is probably the only democratic country where collegium system is in place.
