Promotion is the primary responsibility of the Department of Space. Keeping this basic objective in mind, the Department of Space has prepared the following programs.
Indian National Satellite ( INSAT ) program for telecommunications, television broadcasting, meteorology, education, social applications such as distance-medicine, distance-education, distance-advisory and other similar services.
Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) program for the management of natural resources and various developmental projects across the country using space based systems.
Satellites for communication, navigation, remote sensing and space science and Indigenous capability for design and development of related technology.
INSAT, GSAT, IR s. and IRNSS. satellites and space science missions into space and into orbit Design and development of launch rockets for installation.
Research and development in space science and technology for national development.

- To conduct research and development work in the field of satellites and launch rockets with the aim of achieving complete self-reliance.
- To provide national space infrastructure to meet the telecommunication and broadcasting requirements of the country.
- Providing satellite service required for weather forecasting etc.
- To provide satellite services required for natural resource survey,management of natural disaster, services of public interest and monitoring of environment in the country.
- To provide satellites and specialized products and services required bythe Central Government, State Governments, Semi-Government Organization, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the private sector for use of space science and technology for developmental purposes.
- Validation of the concept of demonstration of space applications.
- To promote the development of research and application programs in space science, as per national requirements.
