Free Movement Regime
• An agreement called Free Movement Regime was made for the people living in the border areas of India and Myanmar to move freely.Under which local residents of the border areas of the two countries can freely move up to 16 kilometres with in each other's border for a period of 72 hours without visa restrictions.
• It aims to remove the in security of the tribals living on the India-Myanmar border as people from these tribal communities reside on both sides of the Indo-Myanmar border. Thus this system has been made to protect the traditional social relations between the border people.
• But in recent few years it has been seen that it is being misused by terrorists and criminals who are using it to bring arms, narcotics, banned items including drugs and counterfeit Indian currency etc. to India.
• In such a situation, the need is felt to regulate this movement so that the real beneficiaries can take advantage of this facility without any hindrance and the activities of terrorists and criminals can also be stopped.
