Role of NGOs and Communities in Disaster Management
Local communities are the first to be affected during a disaster. Also, they have to react first to defend themselves. During disasters, immediate solutions are found by the local people/communities and efforts are made to minimize its damage. Thus the importance of participation of the local community in dealing with disasters is the basic foundation of community based disaster management.
Contribution of NGOs and Communities in Disaster Management
Better reach of NGOs to communities can enable a larger population to respond to disasters (through education and training).
Human resources and skills with NGOs can be helpful in dissemination of warning and subsequent rehabilitation in all three phases of pre-disaster, during and post-disaster.
The local community has accurate information about local conditions, geographical structure and people most vulnerable to disasters, such as children, pregnant women, elderly, etc.
The process of disaster risk reduction and rehabilitation can be accelerated and effective by promoting the participation of non-governmental organisations, government machinery and the local community.additional information Communities are trained in first aid, search and rescue methods, management of community shelters,etc. by promoting mutual cooperation.
If we look at the role of non-governmental organization's in disaster management, they are present with in different communities.
