Rohingya Refugees Problem
The Rohingya community is a pre dominant Muslim group of more than one million people living in Rakhine State on the west coast of Myanmar.
•These people do not have written proof of having settled before 1823, which is currently a constitutional requirement for Myanmar's citizenship.
• The group has been described several times by the United Nations as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.
• Myanmar's army has conducted a 'operation clearance ' in the western border of the country to completely eliminate the rebels of thisgroup. At least 69,000 Rohingya have fled to neighboing Bangladesh, making such allegations of mass violence.
Thus the Rohingya crisis has emerged as a challenge for the neighbouring countries along the border.
• In addition to human trafficking and other security implications, this crisis It also has negative economic effects.
• Bangladesh has announced plans to relocate migrant refugees to an uninhabited island in the Bay of Bengal called 'Bengar Bar' (60 km from the mainland that is prone to floods).Which has been opposed by human rights groups and the United Nations.
Rohingya Problem And There Solution
• The permanent solution to the Rohingya crisis lies in granting them citizenship and equal rights in their country of origin.
• Until this happens, other host countries, including Bangladesh, have an obligation to provide refugees with human rights and dignity.
• India should use constructive diplomacy in this context. The international community and organisations such as ASEAN should also play an important role in the solution.
