Contribution of North-Eastern States in Indian Independence Struggle
India became independent in 1947 and people from every province and state of the country participated and contributed as a whole in this struggle for independence. In this process, the north-eastern states also cooperated according to their ability. The North-East also played an important role in the beginning against the British Empire, which eventually forced the British to leave our mother land.The following are the prominent freedom fighters of this region
U Tirot Singh: This fighter from present-day Meghalaya tried for the unity of tribes and communities and fought with the British power for 3 years, later he was imprisoned in Dhaka where he died.
Queen Guidinliu: Was an important leader in the freedom struggle. He openly opposed the oppressive policies of the British and as a result the 'Joliagang' people refused to pay taxes. He started a movement against the British at the age of 13; He was imprisoned at the age of 16 ( 1932 AD).
Kanaklata Barua: She was an Assamese freedom fighterand was associated with the 'Quit India' movement. When shewas proudly holding the national flag in the 1942 movement, the British shot her to death. Apart from the above mentioned fighters, many other people from the North-East also made important contributions in the freedom struggle of India,some of the mare Bir Tikendra Jeet Singh, Kushal Kunwar, Gombdhan Kunwar and Piyali Phookan. Thus, there is no doubt about this. That the freedom fighters of the North-East have played an important role in the freedom struggle of India.
