Educational Reform Under The Charter Act of 1813
In this Charter Act, the objectives were to encourage local scholars in India and to introduce and advance the knowledge of modern science in the country. For this purpose, an amount of Rs. 1 lakh per annum was sanctioned by the company.
But due to the dispute over the question of spending this amount, this amount was not made available till 1823. Meanwhile, some enlightened Indians continued their efforts at the individual level and gave huge grants for the development of education and the establishment of educational institutions. Among them the name of Raja Rammohan Roy is fore most. He gave a huge grant for the establishment of the Calcutta Hindu College in 1817.
Established by educated Bengalis, education was imparted through English medium and western science and humanities were taught in this college. The government established three Sanskrit colleges at Calcutta, Agra and Banaras. Apart from this, a grant was also given for the translation of European scientific books into Pracya languages.
