Yokohama Strategy
International Decade of Natural Disaster Reduction Yokohama Strategy and Action Plan for a Safer World
A meeting of all the member states of the United Nations and other countries of the 'Natural Disaster Reduction' World Conference was held from 23 to 27 May 1994 in Yokohama City. It was recognized in the meeting that in the last few years, due to natural calamities, human life and economic loss has increased and society in general has become vulnerable to natural calamities. It was also recognized that these disasters particularly affect the poor and disadvantaged communities indeveloping countries because these countries are not prepared to deal with them. Therefore, in this meeting, a decade and beyond, a strategy to reduce the damage caused by these disasters was adopted by the name of Yokohama Strategy.
Following are the resolutions passed for natural disaster reduction in the world meeting:
[1] It will be recorded that the main responsibility of every country is to protect its citizens from natural disaster.
[2] It will pay close attention to the developing countries, in particular, the least developed and land locked countries and small island developing countries.
[3] Wherever it is deemed fit, it will develop the capacity and capacity by making laws at the national level for disaster prevention, prevention and preparedness and voluntary organizations and local communities should be organized in this work.
[4] It will enhance and strengthen those activities through sub-regional, regional and international cooperation that will enable natural and Other disasters can be prevented or reduced or prevented.
In this process the following special emphasis will be placed on
(a) human and institutional capacity building and empowerment;
(b) the collection, dissemination and use of information sharing techniques and
(c) To collect resources.1999-2000 was also declared as the International Decade of Disaster Reduction.
